But somewhere along the line you have to consider music for your ceremony and reception.

Is it better to have a DJ or a live band? That would depend on your budget but most would want a live band if money was not a defining factor.

I recommend what time of music you should have, but I can recommend a band. A few weeks ago I had the priviledge of photographing a jazz band called Jazz Juice. They are based in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. They are made up of 5 very talented musicians each providing a very smooth and classic soundtrack to your wedding.

I cannot recommend them enough, and trust me when I say I have heard alot of Wedding Music!

He was at one of my Best Mate’s wedding a few weeks ago. Kelly did intend to ask another musician but couldn’t make it, so I hooked up Gary with Kelly.

Gary played pieces of music that he wrote or rearranged. In fact if you’re reading this on my blog right now, then you can hear his music playing in the background. My favourite is the first track entitled Indulgence.

It was a real privilege to have Gary at the reception; he played a 2 hour session flawlessly and almost every commented on how great he was.

You are probably wondering what my point is, well I don’t have one. I just wanted to celebrate my talented friends by giving them the credit that they deserve… and he also happens to look good in my photos! :-)

It came about when I was asked to design a showcase DVD for the awesome catering company Indulgence; they wanted a Marks and Spencer’s style. He came back to with two pieces; the first one being played here on the blog is called Indulgence and the second is a piece he arranaged called God bless this child.

I was not sure what to expect, I had questions like their age, skill, sex. Part of me was hoping it would be Escala, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a more mature musicians. I took photos of them playing but I wanted to use my Flash umbrella to get some strong black and white shots. Using one of the studio’s sound dampening boards as a background I set my Nikon D3 to absorb only the strongest highlights. This gives me a strong contrasting image. Once in Adobe Lightroom I could dampen the blacks and push up the whites resulting the this composition.

Two of my favourite local bands were playing in one intimate venue. Also, it was the first time I was taking out my Nikon D3 out on a real gig.

The bands really worked the crowd who were up for it. It was a small venue but that made it more special. The sound, the lights and the atmosphere was all in place for a great evening. I believe the lads also felt a vibe as they really played up to the lively audience.

There were other bands there; they had a good sound but lacked the presence of Bullets or Swamis. Purely from a photographer’s perspective if the band doesn’t give me any kind of attitude or emotion, then it is hard to capture.

A great night, but I must mention one thing about the Esquire venue. Everything was great except the lights, whoever controlled the lights obviously never had a photographer give them any direction. They consistently flooded the guitarists and lead vocalist with a single wash of colour; this gives no contrast or depth to an image and make everything look monotone and uninteresting. However, it wasn’t my gig or my place; in other places I have asked the lighting controller to give me a more varied contrasting range of colours. Red from one side and blue from the other gives the classic and best canvas on the bands.

One of the best things about it is capaturing moments on stage, but one thing I am beginning to appreciate are the crowd. They are some of the most expressive faces I could shoot; they are entirely in the ‘zone’. The artist which they adore is playing on stage so their instinctive reaction is to smile, whoop, cheer and scream!

At my next gig (tomorrow) I’ll be getting more of the crowd, and here’s my message to the crowd and fans, when you see a photographer point his camera at you, it’s because he finds you interesting. You may not like your photograph taken, but trust me, the photograph will only use it if it’s good enough (well, a Pro would anyway). So please smile, wave, cheer, point, pose, grin, laugh or just give me an intense stare!!

I will say this though, he is the first legend I have had the pleasure to meet and shake his hand. A real gentleman. He was swarmed by fans backstage (which I was fortunate to have access to) and constantly remained professional.

I’m not someone who is a celebrity hound, I detest reality shows and talentless fame but without a doubt Mr Daltrey is a great example of a modern day legend.
