How far will I travel to photograph a Wedding? I get asked that alot from friends and clients. For Anna and James I went 130 miles to Lincoln. I'm not a big fan of traveling those distances by myself however Anna and James are both really sweet and nice people I couldn't resist. To make the 3 hour journey go a bit quicker I chatted to my friend on the phone for most of the way using handsfree Bluetooth of course. I drove up the day before the wedding so I could attend the rehearsal. I always try to make the rehearsal whenever I can mainly for the ceremony. There aren't many surprises that can happen during the service but there are often tiny nuggets of detail that can change how I cover the event. Fortunately the gorgeous church in Lincoln had no surprises!
One of the hardest things to do is be ahead of the day; as a Photographer I need to be one step ahead of the Bride, Groom and just about everybody else. Once again I was fortunate that Anna was getting prepared less than 100 metres away from the church which meant I could be a bit flexible on my timings. Later that night I checked all my equipment, made sure all the batteries were charged including the backup spare batteries. On the big day, I was up early to allow myself time for breakfast. It is so important to eat breakfast because for a photographer it is a long day and it won't be until late afternoon where I can get a break. |
I arrived at Anna's parents home. People were milling around taking things easy. I unpacked my gear and headed upstairs to where the girls were putting their makeup on. I genuienly enjoy the organized randomness of the girls preparing on a Wedding day; there are bags, clothes, shoes and makeup spread out but in a organized way that only a woman could do. Sorry lads, but if we had our tools out all over the place we'd never find it! The biggest moment a photographer has to get spot on is the big group shot. I remember when I first started it was a terrifying experience but having done 'quite a few' it's almost second nature, however the number one enemy is the weather and on this particular day it was very cold, so I had to change the location from outside to inside the church. It isn't something I can rehearse so I had to get everyone's attention and cooperation as quickly as possible whilst remaining in control and professional. It was a bit of squeeze but I think I pulled it off.

Then it was a quick drive to the reception. The roads were icy and it already turned dark. The rest of the evening went smoothly. I just had a few posed group shots on the hotel stairs and in one of the rooms with a nice fireplace. Lighting was a bit tricky but that's part of the job. A wedding day moves very quickly so being able to adapt is a key asset to bring as a Wedding Photographer. I really enjoyed my time up there. Anna, James and everyone else were truly lovely. I even had a great time with the videographers!
